E17: Zines

Overview

17th Annual Exercises for Emerging Artists Program
E17: ZINES
March - July 2020

Transformer is proud to announce the 17th Annual Exercises for Emerging Artists Program – E17: Zines. Founded in 2004, Transformer’s annual Exercises For Emerging Artists is a peer critique & mentorship program created to support a selected group of DC-based emerging artists at critical points or crossroads in their professional growth and creative development.

Focusing on a different artistic discipline each year, E17 will bring together seven emerging DC-based artists - Ayana Zaire Cotton, Jennifer Lillis, Athena Naylor, Late Comeback Press (Rachna Soun and Caroline Kim), Evyan Roberts, and Julie Sheah - each exploring the myriad uses of zines and DIY publishing in their artistic practices. The invited artists will receive guidance and feedback from a series of guest mentors, including: Ipsy Bipsy, Malaka Gharib, Christina Long, Adam Griffiths, and Adriana Monsalve.

This rigorous series of meetings will be conducted online. In response to social distancing and feelings of isolation, Transformer has re-imagined the traditional exhibition format of the Exercises, and will be supporting all of the E17 artists in creating a series of print pieces that will be sent out to audiences in the mail, with digital copies being featured on our website.

E17 is being led by Christopher Kardambikis - artist, Assistant Professor and Director of Navigation Press, a master printmaking residency, at the School of Art at George Mason University, with coordination by Transformer’s Exhibitions & Programming Coordinator Katie Lee. Please contact Katie at katie@transformerdc.org if you would like to receive a zine in the mail.
