The Healing Circles oil pastel etchings were born in 2018, after a serious physical injury left Groux unable to move her neck or create for nearly a year. As her body slowly recovered, she began making small, gentle drawings — an intimate process that became both a creative reawakening and the beginning of her healing. That journey evolved in 2020 with the sculpture Becoming, which gave rise to Hope and Fear. Wrestling with these opposing emotions, Groux sought to understand them by giving them physical form; through abstraction, the sculptures became mirrors, revealing emotional truths that words could not express. From this exploration emerged her ongoing series Abstract Nouns — works that attempt to embody what cannot be experienced through the senses, among them Love, Hate, Solace, and Innocence. In 2022, Groux was diagnosed with Stage IV lung cancer. What could have broken her instead became the deepest chapter of her artistic and spiritual journey. Moving through both darkness and light, she discovered that pain, stillness, and uncertainty could become powerful teachers, and that the experience revealed to her the profound gift of presence and the healing potential of creativity. Through it, she came to recognize what she believes is her purpose: to create works that not only heal her own soul but also offer healing, reflection, and hope to others.

ABOUT THE ARTIST/
Laurence Elle Groux is an introspective, self-taught artist working in stoneware ceramics and oil etching, drawing core inspiration from the human psyche. Born and raised in a small village in Switzerland, she moved to the United States in 1996, immersing herself in New York City's art scene, where she has lived and worked ever since. Groux's work has been featured in group and solo exhibitions in New York, Switzerland, and Philadelphia, and is held in collections in Pennsylvania, New York, California, Switzerland, Canada, and Mexico. Her work has also been selected by Kelly Long, Senior Curatorial Assistant at the Whitney Museum of American Art, and David Max Horowitz, Assistant Curator at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, for two separate group exhibitions at the Greenwich Art Society in Connecticut.
Washington, DC – Transformer is thrilled to launch our 2026 Fall Exhibition Season with A Spark of Consciousness: Healing the Soul, the first solo exhibition by Swiss-born, New York based artist Laurence Elle Groux, on view at Transformer October 10 through December 5, 2026. Presented as part of Transformer’s cultural partnership with the Embassy of Switzerland in the US, the exhibition brings together Groux’s unique stoneware ceramic sculptures and oil pastel etchings that give physical form to emotional and spiritual states. Working in stoneware ceramics and oil pastel etching, Groux excavates the depths of her inner world in search of meaning, healing, and transformation. Each piece reflects the many influences she has encountered along the way, from ancient hieroglyphs and sacred symbols to mythology, Renaissance masters, Modernism, and Outsider Art. A Spark of Consciousness: Healing the Soul brings her sculpture and drawing together for the first time in a single exhibition, offering viewers a visual language for experiences that often remain beyond words. By giving tangible form to concepts such as Love, Hate, Wisdom, Awakening, Hope, and Fear, Groux invites visitors to encounter the intangible within themselves.
